Anger Management

The Family Harmony (“TFH”) Anger Management Classes are taught by certified professional counselors experienced in both group therapies and one on one sessions. For over three decades, TFH provided quality anger management courses for those struggling with feelings of rage and stress. Our anger management classes focus on the consequences of anger while teaching anger management techniques to avoid violence. Effective communication, self-awareness and stress management are productive tools for preventing uncontrolled anger outbreaks. Our counselors as always maintain supportive and non-judgmental educational environment and experience intended to expose and confront anger in its many forms and prevent disintegration of these feelings to far more serious matters and potential criminal behavior such as domestic violence, animal abuse and road rage.

Our counselors conduct these classes in group settings but individual sessions depending on needs and court orders can be arranged. In an open discussion anger management class our clients learn techniques to handle anger as well as meet allies to help you deal with the pressures of life.

What is a Court ordered anger management class? Anger management classes are taken for a variety of reasons. Sometimes these classes are conducted for personal growth or at the request of a loved one or employer. Anger management classes may also be requested by the court or probation department as part of a plea bargain or minor violation of the law. If the court has ordered you to take an anger management class, then you are legally obligated to fulfill this requirement. Depending on where you live, your county may have certain requirements for the attendance or participation in a court ordered anger management class. The number of sessions or hours is usually determined by the judge or by probation.

TFH Anger Management classes are California court accepted.
Services are provided to individuals who proactively wish to self-refer themselves for counseling to take better control of their anger, or for individuals whom have been referred by a community service agency or employer, or as a condition of probation, individuals who have been ordered by the court to complete anger management counseling. The level and duration of services is determined by court order. Accelerated Anger Management Programs, with approval of the courts, on a case by case basis are available.

Domestic Violence

The Family Harmony (“TFH”) stands ready to confront the issue of domestic violence. As explained below individuals convicted of or who plead to a domestic violence offense must complete an approved 52 week treatment program consisting of group counseling related to the prevention of reoccurring domestic violence. It is of extreme importance to take this matter seriously to ensure that the level of counseling is appropriate and result oriented. Our goal is to ensure that the counseling received by our clients is on the highest professional level and lead to true behavioral changes. While sometimes little can be done about the past, counseling and education is about the future. Your future and your family’s future, your children’s future may be at stake. TFH will provide the education and support the clients referred to us by the criminal justice system need to enter rehabilitative stage. That is why we are the California’s judicial system go-to option for quality court approved Domestic Violence counseling classes.

What is domestic violence

Domestic Violence is physical violence, threatened violence, and abuse which occurs in the following relationships:
  • Married Couples (also known as Spousal Abuse)
  • Cohabiting Couples
  • Persons who have a child or children in common
  • Persons in a dating relationship or who were in a former dating relationship
  • Persons who were formerly married to each other.
  • Domestic Violence covers a wide range of abuse, including spousal abuse and child endangerment. Any threatening or violent act, even if the accused did not intend to harm or compromise the safety and security of the victim, could be grounds for prosecution under the California Domestic Violence laws. Domestic violence cases are treated differently than other criminal cases. There are designated prosecutors and special Domestic Violence Units (DV Units) within the prosecutor’s office that stand ready to aggressively prosecute anyone charged with domestic violence. Examples of domestic violence abuse include:
  • Threats
  • Intimidation
  • Annoying Phone Calls
  • Stalking (such as following the victim to and from work and threatening the victim)
  • Physical Assault or abuse (hitting, slapping, pushing, shoving or kicking)
  • Verbal, social, and sexual abuse.
  • Domestic Violence cases in Los Angeles are generally filed under Penal Code section 273.5 – Inflicting Corporal Injury on Spouse or Cohabitant(misdemeanor or felony) and Penal Code section 243(e)(1) – Domestic Battery (misdemeanor).

    Domestic Violence Penalties

Domestic violence charges may be filed as a misdemeanor or a felony. How the prosecutor files the criminal charges is based on the seriousness of the case. Severe injuries (including cuts and broken bones) will almost always be charged as a felony. No injury or slight injury cases will generally be filled as a misdemeanor. Both, prior acts of reported domestic violence and the criminal history of the accused may also influence how the case is filled – usually as a felony.

    Misdemeanors:
  • Jail sentence (Zero days to one year County jail)
  • Counseling (52-week program)
  • Hours of community service or physical labor (CalTrans)
  • Various court fines
  • Stay-Away Order from the victim, including moving out of residence
  • “No Harm, No Strike” Order for couples.
  • Felonies:
  • Jail time (punishable by two to four years in state prison)
  • Counseling (52-week program)
  • Hours of community service or physical labor (CalTrans)
  • Various fines
  • Stay-Away Order from the victim, including moving out of residence
  • “No Harm, No Strike” Order for couples.
  • Can the victim drop the charges?

In California, you can be arrested and prosecuted for domestic violence even if the victim does not want you arrested. In some cases, especially with spousal abuse, it is very difficult for the victim to drop charges against the abuser. The prosecutor can proceed with the criminal case even if the alleged victim decides not to go to court. The prosecutor is the only one who can drop charges because the victim is merely a witness in a government prosecution.

Petty Theft & Prevention Of Shoplifting Counseling

The Family Harmony (“TFH”) is leading among court approved and directed counseling programs to address this epidemic. Just recently management of TFH ‘s affiliate, Family Harmony, distributed a Fact Sheet to every Judicial Officers, Court Administrators, Clerks, City and District Attorney’s Office, Public Defenders and Los Angeles Co. Probation Officers containing some of the staggering statistical data regarding the raising epidemic of retail and employee stealing, raising awareness of the issue and offering guidance in the type of counseling and education that can be provided along with the solutions offered by TFH.

Shoplifting and employee theft counseling programs are appropriate for anyone convicted of stealing and ordered by the Court or Probation Department to attend this program. We intend for participants to learn there is a pattern of thinking and intent that often precedes and goes on during the act of stealing. We focus not on punishment or judgement but education and prevention, on development of an “internal control system” to maintain awareness of what may be going on in individual cases and then take steps to change future outcomes. We believe that by educating the perpetrators and giving them opportunity to adjust their thinking before committing the act they will learn to empathize with the victims of their behavior and understand that these actions have real consequences for many people, including perpetrators themselves and their families.

The program is offered in the format demanded by individual cases and features both group therapies and individualized one on one counseling that is the hallmark of careful learning experienced practiced at TFH. We do not believe one size fits all and therefore make every effort to make this new and meaningful program become yet another beacon of petty crime prevention and rehabilitation by TFH.

    Assessments and Psychological Evaluations

TFH employs a group of specialized mental health professionals to assess clients referred by public agencies and private defense counsel, suspect of having a substance abuse problem, to assess and treat disorders usually first diagnosed in infancy, childhood, or adolescence. Our staff will follow a multiaxial system involving an assessment on several axes, each of which refers to a different domain of information that may help our staff plan treatment and predict outcome. The multiaxial system promotes the application of the biopsychosocial model in clinical, educational, and research settings.
